Clinging to a slim league with only a few ticks left on the clock the basketball was right where the basketball team needed it to be.
That would be in the capable hands of senior guar Izzy Durst. All the UW-Parkside Division 2 recruit did was dribble through crowds and when Argyle/Pecatonica had to foul she put in six straight free throws that iced the 59-56 win. Durst finished the night with 33 points.
The win by the Golden Eagles over the recently crowned Six Rivers East champions also featured the always tough Barneveld defense. The girls combined to only allow four AP girls to score and allow the Eagles to outscore the visitors 32-26 the second half.
The run erased the 30-27 AP lead at the end of the first half. Brooke Wellnitz had 12 points and Kylie Butler 10 to stake AP to the lead.
When it was over Butler and Wellnitz both scored 18 with Avari Steiner adding 11 and Loretta Tisch nine.
That was it, though, for AP.
By contrast both teams played seven girls. All seven who got on the floor for the Eagles scored.
“It was just a great high school basketball game,” said Eagles veteran coach Jim Myers.
The game was a match-up of girls basketball powerhouses. AP drew the number one seed in their side of the Division 5 bracket with Barneveld number four.
